Snow Shoveling

It’s snowing again. As I look outside at the snow piling up on the driveway again, I contemplate if I dare go out in it to run errands. Also, I know I will be shoveling the driveway and the walk again to allow safe access to my clinic. So I have decided to put both off for a while to write my first blog.

Snow shoveling is a great way for kids to calm and organize their nervous system. Anotherwords it helps them to relax. It is a form of deep pressure/ heavy work.

Some other calming and organizing winter activities are to have them build an igloo. Do this first by piling up a large amount of snow. They can use shovels, buckets, or other containers to do this. The trick is to use their muscles. Once the snow pile is large, have them dig out an entrance into their igloo, then have them carve out enough room for them and a friend to fit comfortably in the igloo. Surprisingly it will be somewhat warm inside the igloo. You will have a happy, and relaxed child.
Some kids may resist at first. You can create games and challenges to motivate them such as “who can build a bigger snow pile?” or “Who can shovel the most snow in 3 minutes.” Start with these and then most kids wil get their own ideas. HAve fun!!!! Please share your experiences and other great ideas.

Susan, thanks for seeing us today.  I am very excited about doing all this for Aiden and I know he enjoyed himself with you as well.  He can't stop talking about you.
